The road to godliness isn’t a sprint—it’s a lifelong marathon. It’s about weaving small, intentional habits into the fabric of our daily lives that bring us closer to God. But let’s be honest: the idea of “being perfected” can feel daunting. Perfection? That’s impossible, right? Thankfully, God doesn’t ask us to achieve flawlessness; He asks us to trust Him, to grow step by step, and to commit to walking in His ways.

This week, as we begin our series on the six habits modeled by Jesus, I want to take a fresh look at why building a spiritual foundation matters—and how it transforms everything from our perspective to our purpose.

The Beauty of the Foundation
Every sturdy house begins with a strong foundation. Without it, the walls crack, the roof sags, and eventually, the whole structure falls apart. Our spiritual lives are no different. The habits we practice today—no matter how small they seem—determine whether we’ll stand firm in times of trial or falter under life’s pressures.

Jesus spoke of this in Matthew 7:24-27 when He compared those who hear and obey His words to a wise man who built his house on the rock. Storms came, floods rose, and winds blew, but that house stood firm because it had the right foundation. Isn’t that the kind of life we all want? A life that’s steady, grounded, and unshakable?

Why Habits Matter
Here’s the secret: life isn’t transformed in a single moment but in the daily choices we make. Habits are powerful because they shape who we are over time. When we choose to spend time in God’s Word, pray regularly, or set aside moments for worship, those small acts compound into significant spiritual growth.

Think about Jesus. He didn’t just perform miracles and preach powerful sermons; He also modeled consistency in His spiritual life. Whether retreating for solitude, praying through the night, or honoring the Sabbath, He gave us a blueprint for a life anchored in God.

The Invitation to Start w/ Small Habits
Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed by where to begin. That’s okay. God isn’t asking for perfection today—He’s asking for a willing heart. Start small. Choose one habit, one intentional step toward God this week.

As you take that step, remember this: God is faithful to complete the work He begins in us (Philippians 1:6). You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just take the next step, trusting that He will guide you as you grow.
