Part of the Being Perfected in Spiritual Warfare
View the full study outline here: Learning the Weapons of Our Warfare in Christ
When the battle is intense and your emotions are all over the place, it can feel like you are standing on shifting sand. One moment you feel encouraged, and the next you feel overwhelmed. In those moments, God offers you a steady, unshakable weapon: faith (1 Corinthians 16:13). Faith in spiritual warfare is not pretending everything is fine or denying your feelings. It is choosing to trust what God has said above what you see, feel, or fear.
Faith can feel challenging for new believers. You may ask yourself, “Do I have enough faith? What if I still feel afraid? What if my situation does not change right away?” Scripture teaches that “without faith it is impossible to please God” and that those who come to Him must believe that He exists and rewards those who seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). The good news is that faith is not about how strong you feel. Faith is about where you place your trust.
When you put your faith in Jesus, even small, shaky faith in a strong Savior becomes a powerful weapon. Scripture says that everyone born of God overcomes the world, and “this is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4). Faith in spiritual warfare allows you to hold on to God’s promises when the enemy whispers lies, and to keep moving forward when everything in you wants to give up.
Faith in spiritual warfare
Faith in spiritual warfare is the victory force that connects you to what Jesus has already accomplished. On the cross and through His resurrection, Jesus defeated sin, death, and the powers of darkness. You are not fighting to earn victory; you are learning to stand in the victory that has already been won (1 Corinthians 15:57). Faith takes what Jesus has done and says, “That is true for me, here and now.”
Faith in spiritual warfare also acts like a shield. Scripture describes “the shield of faith” that extinguishes all the flaming arrows of the evil one. When doubts, accusations, and fearful thoughts start flying at your mind, faith lifts up that shield. Instead of agreeing with every thought that passes through your mind, you begin to ask, “Is this what God says?” If it is not, you refuse to receive it (2 Corinthians 10:4–5).
Faith does not ignore reality, but it sees a greater reality. The facts of your situation might be painful or confusing. Abraham “faced the fact” that his body was as good as dead, yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God (Romans 4:19–21). Faith looks at the facts, then looks to God and says, “This is what I see, but I choose to base my life on what You have said.” Faith in spiritual warfare does not mean you never feel afraid. It means that when fear rises, you answer it with God’s promises (Isaiah 41:10).
How faith grows in the middle of battle
Faith grows as you hear and receive the Word of God. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). The more you read, listen to, meditate on, and speak God’s Word, the more your heart learns what is true. In spiritual warfare, this is essential, because the enemy works through deception, half-truths, and twisted messages.
Faith also grows through obedience. Every time you act on what God has said, even in small ways, your faith is strengthened. For example, when you forgive someone who hurt you because God calls you to forgive, you are practicing faith (Ephesians 4:32). When you choose honesty instead of compromise, generosity instead of fear, or prayer instead of panic, you are using faith in spiritual warfare in practical ways.
Another way faith grows is through remembering. In seasons of battle, it is easy to forget what God has already done for you. David strengthened himself in the Lord and often remembered God’s past faithfulness as he faced new battles. Taking time to recall answered prayers, past breakthroughs, and moments where God carried you builds your faith for today’s fight. You begin to say, “He was faithful then, and He will be faithful now.”
Faith also grows in community. God never meant for you to fight alone. We are told not to give up meeting together, but to encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24–25). Being around other believers who share testimonies, speak encouragement, and stand with you in prayer strengthens your faith. When you are too tired to believe strongly for yourself, someone else’s faith can help hold you up.
Using faith as a weapon in everyday life
Using faith in spiritual warfare begins with a simple choice: “I will believe what God says.” That choice is tested in everyday situations. When a negative report comes, when finances are tight, when relationships are strained, or when temptation calls, faith asks, “What has God said about this?” Then, instead of agreeing with fear or despair, you choose to agree with His Word (Psalm 119:105).
Practically, this might look like finding specific Scriptures that speak to your situation and holding on to them. If you are battling fear, you might cling to promises like “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). If you are dealing with shame, you may declare that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Speaking these truths out loud turns faith from an idea in your head into a living weapon against the enemy’s accusations.
Faith in spiritual warfare also means trusting God’s timing and ways. Sometimes the answer comes quickly; other times it takes longer than you hoped. There may be days when you do not see any visible change, yet faith chooses to believe that God is still working. This does not mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is easy. It means bringing your pain to God and saying, “I do not understand everything, but I trust You” (Proverbs 3:5–6). That trust frustrates the enemy’s plans and keeps you anchored when circumstances are shaking.
Faith is not a feeling you wait for. It is a decision you make and a posture you hold. Feelings will come and go, but you can keep choosing faith. You can say, “Today, I choose to believe that God is who He says He is. I choose to believe that His Word is true.” Over time, those choices shape your reactions, your habits, and your outlook on life.
Reflection: where is God inviting you to trust Him?
Take a moment to ask yourself, “Where in my life is the battle the loudest right now?” It might be a decision you need to make, a fear about the future, a hidden struggle, or a relationship that feels fragile. Now ask, “What has God said about this?” You may want to look up a verse, write it down, and speak it out loud as your declaration of faith. As you do, remember that even small steps of faith in spiritual warfare matter deeply to God, and He delights in walking with you through every battle.
Looking at your current season, in which specific area do you sense God inviting you to stop agreeing with fear and start actively agreeing with His Word by faith?

A prayer for faith in spiritual warfare
Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You for giving me faith as a weapon in spiritual warfare. I confess that many times I have listened to fear, doubt, and lies more than to Your Word. Today, I choose to put my trust in You. Strengthen my faith and help me to stand on what You have spoken, even when my feelings and circumstances disagree. Teach me to lift up the shield of faith against every lie of the enemy. Remind me of Your faithfulness and fill my heart with confidence in who You are. I believe that You are with me, You are for me, and You are working for my good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
