The Journey to Godliness: Small Habits, Big Transformation

The road to godliness isn’t a sprint, it’s a lifelong marathon. It’s about weaving small, intentional habits into the fabric of our daily lives that bring us closer to God. These Christian spiritual habits form the foundation of a life that grows steadily in Him.

But let’s be honest: the idea of “being perfected” can feel daunting. Perfection? That’s impossible, right? Thankfully, God doesn’t ask us to achieve flawlessness; He asks us to trust Him, to grow step by step, and to commit to walking in His ways.

This series explores six foundational habits modeled by Jesus that help shape a life of godliness. I cover these same six habits in my book, Being Perfected in Godliness: The Foundations. Each one builds upon the other, forming a steady and lasting spiritual foundation.

What Are the Foundations of Godliness

It’s important to know that godliness is not formed in a single moment. It is cultivated through consistent, daily practices that align our lives with God. Jesus modeled this kind of life, He did not only teach truth. He lived it through rhythms and habits that kept Him connected to the Father.

These habits are not about performance. They are about relationship. They create space for God to work in us, shaping our character, renewing our minds, and strengthening our faith over time.

The Beauty of a Strong Spiritual Foundation

Every sturdy house begins with a strong foundation. Without it, the structure cannot stand. Jesus described this clearly: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24).

Storms will come. Pressure will come. The question is whether our lives are built on something steady. The habits we practice today determine whether we will stand firm in those moments or struggle to remain grounded.

Why Christian Spiritual Habits Matter

Transformation does not happen all at once. It happens through the daily choices we make. Habits shape direction and direction shapes outcomes.

When we consistently spend time in God’s Word, pray, worship, and create space for Him, those small acts begin to shape who we are becoming.

Jesus modeled this clearly. He withdrew for solitude, prayed regularly, honored times of rest, and lived in constant connection with the Father. His life gives us a pattern to follow.

Starting Small and Growing Steadily

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about building new habits. The invitation is not to do everything at once. Start with one step. Choose one habit and make space for it this week.

As you take that step, remember: “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

Growth happens over time. God is faithful in the process.

Growing in Godliness Through Daily Practice

This journey is not about adding pressure or checking boxes. It is about creating space for transformation. As these habits become part of your life, you may begin to notice:

  • Your perspective changing
  • Your thoughts becoming more aligned with truth
  • Your responses becoming more grounded
  • Your relationship with God growing deeper

This is the work of God unfolding over time, and you developing habits that will serve you for a lifetime.

Continuing the Journey

The journey of Being Perfected is a lifelong process of growing into maturity in Christ.

Each of these habits offers a pathway into deeper relationship with Him.
