Part of the ‘Living the Image of God’ Series

This article is part of the Living the Image of God: Seven Principles from Eden series. In this study we are exploring what I call the Sevenfold Eden blessing, drawn from Genesis 1:26–28 and Genesis 2:15. These passages reveal God’s original design for humanity as His image bearers.

In the previous article we explored Fruitfulness and Multiplication, the first blessing God spoke over humanity and how our lives are meant to produce life that reflects His character. This second principle moves us into the responsibility that accompanies that blessing.

Understanding Biblical Dominion Stewardship

As I continued reading through the creation passages, I noticed that God did not only bless humanity to be fruitful. In Genesis 1:28, He also gave humanity a responsibility.

“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28).

The word dominion can sometimes sound harsh when we read it today. Yet the Hebrew word radah carries the idea of royal authority, the kind of responsibility a king would carry over a kingdom.

When I reflected on that, I began to see that dominion was never meant to be about domination. Humanity was not given permission to exploit creation or rule with selfish ambition. The authority God gave was meant to reflect His own character.

Authority That Reflects God’s Character

Just as God rules with wisdom, justice, and care, we are meant to reflect that same kind of leadership in the way we handle what He entrusts to us.

Psalm 8 reminds us that humanity was given a remarkable responsibility within creation.

“What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and honor. You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet” (Psalm 8:4–6).

Even within that authority, the passage reminds us that the authority we exercise is always under God’s authority. Everything ultimately belongs to Him.

We are not owners of the earth. We are caretakers of what belongs to God.

Dominion Through Servant Leadership

Jesus later reframes the entire idea of leadership when He speaks to His disciples.

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant” (Matthew 20:25–26).

That teaching connects beautifully with the Eden blessing. Dominion in God’s design was always meant to be exercised with humility, responsibility, and a servant’s heart.

True authority in God’s kingdom reflects His character. It cares for what has been entrusted. It protects rather than exploits. It serves rather than dominates.

Stewardship in the Journey of Being Perfected

For me, this principle connects directly to the journey of Being Perfected. As I mature spiritually, I begin to understand that anything God places in our hands is something we are called to steward well on His behalf.

That stewardship may include our work, our influence, our relationships, or even the resources we manage. All of these become areas where we reflect the character of God in the way we lead, care, and serve.

This principle challenges me to look at the areas of responsibility in my life differently. Instead of asking what I can gain from what I have been given, I have to ask whether I am caring for it in a way that reflects God’s character.

Continuing the Study

This principle is another part of the Sevenfold Eden blessing revealed in Genesis. In the next article we will explore Living from God’s Provision, and what it means to work diligently while trusting God as our true source.

What area of responsibility in my life might God be inviting me to steward with greater wisdom, humility, and care?
