Living the Image of God: The Sevenfold Eden Blessing
When we return to the opening chapters of Genesis, we are not just reading the beginning of creation. We are seeing the beginning of purpose.
In Genesis 1:26–28 and Genesis 2:15, God speaks over humanity and gives instruction that reveals His original design. What I call the Sevenfold Eden blessing is drawn from these passages and reflects the life humanity was created to live as God’s image bearers.
These principles are not just historical. They continue to shape how we understand our lives, our work, our relationships, and our walk with God today.
What Is the Sevenfold Eden Blessing
The Sevenfold Eden blessing describes seven core aspects of God’s design for humanity at creation.
God created humanity in His image and placed them in the garden with purpose, responsibility, and relationship. These principles reveal what life looks like when it is aligned with His design.
Even though sin introduced brokenness, these original intentions still help us understand what it means to grow into maturity in Christ.
Why the Sevenfold Eden Blessing Still Matters Today
It is easy to think of purpose as something that begins after salvation or later in life. The Genesis account shows us something different. That purpose began at creation.
God’s design for humanity included fruitfulness, stewardship, meaningful work, and relationship with Him from the very beginning. As we grow in Christ, we are not creating a new identity. We are being shaped and restored into what God originally intended.
For the journey of Being Perfected, these principles offer a framework for understanding how everyday life can reflect God.
The Seven Principles from Eden
Below is an overview of each principle in the Sevenfold Eden blessing. Each one is explored more deeply in its own article.
God’s first blessing over humanity was to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28).
This principle goes beyond physical increase. It includes the ways our lives produce something that brings life to others. Fruitfulness reflects the character of God being expressed through our lives.
God gave humanity authority over creation, but that authority was never meant to be domination.
Dominion reflects stewardship. It is the responsibility to care for what God has entrusted to us in a way that reflects His character (Genesis 1:28).
Before humanity was called to produce, God provided what was needed for life (Genesis 1:29–30).
This principle reminds us that while we work diligently, God remains the true Source of everything that sustains us.
Work was part of God’s design before the fall (Genesis 2:15).
Humanity was placed in the garden to cultivate and care for it. Work is not merely obligation. It can become worship when offered to God.
Humanity was called to serve and guard the garden (Genesis 2:15).
Caring for creation reflects our role as stewards of what belongs to God. It is an expression of obedience and respect for what He has made.
God’s design includes peace, wholeness, and right relationship.
Shalom reflects harmony with God, with others, within ourselves, and with creation.
At the center of everything is relationship with God.
Humanity was created to walk with Him in ongoing fellowship. Through Christ, that relationship is restored.
Living the Image of God Today
These seven principles are not separate ideas. They work together to form a complete picture of life as God designed it.
When we grow in Christ:
- We begin to bear fruit that reflects Him.
- We steward what He entrusts to us with wisdom.
- We trust Him as our source.
- We approach our work with purpose.
- We care for what He has made.
- We pursue peace in our relationships.
- We walk with Him daily.
This is the life of being formed, shaped, and matured in Him…a life of being perfected.
Continuing the Journey
The journey of Being Perfected is a lifelong process of growing into maturity in Christ.
These principles serve as a foundation, helping us understand what it means to live in alignment with God’s design from the very beginning.
As you move through each article in this series, take time to reflect on how these truths are shaping your life and drawing you deeper into relationship with Him.
Reflection:
As we move through these principles together, consider how each one might shape the way you live, work, steward what God has entrusted to you, and walk daily in relationship with Him.
