Part of the ‘Living the Image of God’ Series

This article is part of the Living the Image of God: Seven Principles from Eden series. In this study we are exploring what I call the Sevenfold Eden blessing, drawn from Genesis 1:26–28 and Genesis 2:15. These passages reveal God’s original design for humanity as His image bearers.

In the previous article we explored Living from God’s Provision, where we saw that God provides before humanity produces. This next principle builds on that foundation by showing that work itself was part of God’s good design from the beginning.

Work and Care in the Garden

Genesis gives us a clear picture of humanity’s first responsibility in the garden.

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15).

The Hebrew words used here carry rich meaning. The word abad refers to working or serving, while shamar means to keep, guard, or protect. Together they describe work that is both productive and protective.

Adam was not simply placed in the garden to exist. He was given meaningful responsibility to cultivate and care for what God had created.

Later in Genesis, Adam is also given the task of naming the animals. “Out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them” (Genesis 2:19).

This moment shows another dimension of work. It involves observation, discernment, and thoughtful engagement with the world God created.

What Does the Bible Say About Work Before the Fall

One of the most important things the Genesis story reveals is that work existed before sin entered the world. Many people assume work is a punishment or a curse. The story shows something different. Work was already a part of life in Eden.

What changed after the fall was not the goodness of work itself, but the difficulty that came with it. “Cursed is the ground because of you; with hard labor you shall eat from it all the days of your life” (Genesis 3:17). The frustration and struggle associated with work came later, yet the original purpose of work remained intact.

From the beginning, work was intended to be a meaningful participation in God’s creation.

Work as Service to God

The New Testament continues this understanding of work as something that can be offered to God. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people, knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward of the inheritance” (Colossians 3:23–24).

This reframes everyday labor. Tasks that might seem ordinary can become acts of worship when they are done with the awareness that we are serving God.

Paul also reminds believers that their work is connected to God’s larger purpose. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

Our work becomes one of the ways we participate in what God is doing in the world.

Purposeful Work in the Journey of Being Perfected

For me, this principle connects deeply to the journey of Being Perfected.

As we grow spiritually, we begin to see our daily responsibilities differently. Work is no longer only about earning income or completing tasks. It becomes a way of reflecting God’s character in the spaces where He has placed us.

Some work is visible and celebrated. Other work happens quietly in homes, workplaces, or ministries where few people notice. Yet every task offered to God can become meaningful.

Whether someone is leading a team, caring for family members, building a business, serving in ministry, or completing simple daily responsibilities, each act can become part of serving God within His plans and purposes.

When we see work through this lens, our labor becomes more than obligation. It becomes participation in God’s ongoing work in the world.

Continuing the Study

Work reveals another part of God’s original design for humanity. In the next article we will explore Caring for Creation, and how humanity’s calling includes serving and guarding the world God has entrusted to us.

How might the responsibilities in my daily life become acts of worship when I intentionally offer my work to God?
