Part of the ‘Living the Image of God’ Series

This article is part of the Living the Image of God: Seven Principles from Eden series. In this study we are exploring what I call the Sevenfold Eden blessing, drawn from Genesis 1:26–28 and Genesis 2:15. These passages reveal God’s original design for humanity as His image bearers.

In the previous article we explored Purposeful Work and Care, where we saw that work was part of God’s design from the beginning and can be offered as worship. This next principle brings that idea into sharper focus by showing how our work includes caring for the world God has entrusted to us.

Caring for Creation in the Bible

Genesis 2:15 gives us a clear picture of humanity’s role in creation. “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it”.

The words used here are significant. To “cultivate” the garden means to serve it, and to “keep” it means to guard and protect it. Together, these words describe a responsibility that is both active and attentive. This tells us that humanity was placed in the garden not to exploit it, but to care for it in a way that reflects God’s character.

Genesis 1:31 reminds us of how God viewed His creation. “God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good”. Creation carries value because it comes from God.

What Does the Bible Say About Caring for Creation

When we look at the broader witness of Scripture, we see that the earth ultimately belongs to God. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and those who live in it”.

This shifts our perspective. We are not owners of creation; we are stewards, entrusted with something that belongs to God.

Caring for creation is not an optional responsibility. It flows directly from our identity as those made in His image and placed within His world.

The apostle Paul also gives us a glimpse of creation’s present condition. “For the eagerly awaiting creation waits for the revealing of the sons and daughters of God… For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now” (Romans 8:19, 22).

Creation itself is affected by the fall and is waiting for restoration. This adds weight to our role as those who live within it.

Stewardship That Reflects God’s Character

As I reflected on this principle, I began to see that caring for creation is not separate from spiritual life. It is one of the ways we express obedience and honor to God. The same God who created the earth has entrusted it to humanity to serve and guard.

This can take many forms in everyday life.

  • It may look like making wise choices about how we use resources.
  • It may involve caring for animals with respect.
  • It may include maintaining environments in ways that promote life and flourishing.

These actions are not about trends or opinions. They flow from a recognition that the earth belongs to God.

Caring for Creation in the Journey of Being Perfected

For me, this principle connects to the journey of Being Perfected by reminding me that spiritual maturity touches every area of life. As we grow in Christ, we begin to reflect His character not only in our relationships and words, but also in how we interact with the world around us.

  • Gratitude replaces carelessness.
  • Responsibility replaces neglect.
  • Wisdom replaces waste.

Caring for creation becomes an expression of worship. It is a quiet acknowledgment that what God has made matters, and that we are called to honor Him in how we handle it.

Continuing the Study

This principle shows that humanity’s role includes serving and guarding what God has made. In the next article we will explore Harmonious Living (Shalom), and what it means to pursue peace and right-ordered relationships in God’s design.

In what ways might God be inviting me to more intentionally care for and steward the resources and environments He has entrusted to me?
