Part of the ‘Living the Image of God’ Series

This article is part of the Living the Image of God: Seven Principles from Eden series. In this study we are exploring what I call the Sevenfold Eden blessing, drawn from Genesis 1:26–28 and Genesis 2:15. These passages reveal God’s original design for humanity as His image bearers.

In the previous article we explored Harmonious Living (Shalom), where we saw that God’s design includes wholeness and right relationship. This final principle brings us to the center of that design, which is relationship with God Himself.

Walking with God in the Beginning

From the opening chapters of Genesis, we see that humanity was created not only with a purpose for God, but for relationship. “Then God said, ‘Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness’” (Genesis 1:26).

Being made in God’s image points beyond function. It speaks to relationship, connection, and the capacity to know Him. Genesis 3:8 gives us a glimpse into what that relationship looked like. “They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day”.

This moment suggests that walking with God was part of the natural rhythm of life in the garden. There was nearness, familiarity, and ongoing fellowship.

What Does It Mean to Walk with God Daily

To walk with God means to live in continual awareness of His presence and in relationship with Him. It is not limited to moments of prayer or specific spiritual activities. It is a way of life. The prophet Micah captures this clearly. “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

Walking with God involves humility, attentiveness, and a willingness to align our lives with His ways. Jesus expands this understanding through the image of abiding. “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit” (John 15:4, 5).

Abiding speaks of ongoing connection. It is not occasional. It is continuous.

Restored Fellowship Through Christ

The relationship that was disrupted in Eden is restored through Jesus. Through Him, we are invited back into the kind of fellowship that humanity was created to experience. Scripture points to a future where that relationship is fully restored. “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among the people, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people” (Revelation 21:3).

What began in the garden will be fully realized in God’s presence. Even now, believers are invited to live in that reality through the Spirit.

Walking with God in the Journey of Being Perfected

For me, this principle is at the heart of the journey of Being Perfected. All of the other principles find their meaning here.

  • Fruitfulness flows from connection with Him.
  • Stewardship reflects His character.
  • Provision is trusted because of relationship.
  • Work becomes worship in His presence.
  • Peace grows out of alignment with Him.

Walking with God is not about performance. It is about relationship. Spiritual disciplines such as prayer, Bible study, and times of quiet are not tasks to complete. They are pathways that help us remain aware of His presence and grow in fellowship with Him.

As we mature in Christ, we begin to arrange our lives around His presence. Our decisions, our priorities, and our rhythms are shaped by our relationship with Him.

Continuing the Study

This principle brings the Sevenfold Eden blessing to its center. Walking with God is the foundation that gives meaning to every other aspect of life as His image bearers. View the full study here: https://imbeingperfected.com/2026/03/06/sevenfold-eden-blessing/
